Who is God?

You will find many references to passages in Scripture here, which can follow along in a number of ways:

  1. Open a paper Bible (we recommend this!)
  2. Download the ‘Bible App’ on your phone.
  3. Go to a website called ‘Bible Gateway’ and run it alongside this article.
  4. Hover over the passage in question.

God is the creator and sustainer of the heavens, the universe, and all that lives in them (Genesis 2:1-3; Colossians 1:17). He is spirit, meaning that he is physically different from us (John 4:24). He is one, but he exists as three persons: God the father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17). In our human understanding, this is a hugely confusing concept for us to wrap our heads around but we must remember that God is infinitely greater than we are! He is everywhere (Psalm 139:7-12); he had no beginning and will have no end (1 Timothy 1:17; Revelation 4:9-11). He knows all things (Psalm 147:5).

God is love (1 John 4:7-8). Indeed, love comes from God! He is compassionate, gracious and slow to anger (Psalm 103:8), but he also judges us when we sin (Psalm 5:5) but also offers forgiveness (1 John 1:9); a concept we will discuss shortly.

God is actively involved in his creation, not some distant observer of it and he knows our thoughts before we even think them (Psalm 139:2-4). Even so, we can pray to him and have a personal relationship with him. God divinely influenced the Bible in such a way that they are his very words (2 Timothy 3:16) to help teach and train us to live in a way that is honoring of him and loving to those around us.

There is much more to be said about God, but as a starting point, this will hopefully give you some insight into just who it is that we serve!
