Who [On Earth] Was Jesus?

Around 2,000 years ago, a man was born in the Middle East whose short life has sent ripples around the earth ever since. His name was Jesus Christ.

We recommend reading the two chapters of Luke before continuing.

A Brief Overview of Jesus’ Life

Jesus’ mother was Mary and she was engaged to a man named Joseph when an angel of the Lord spoke to her. Although she was a virgin, God’s Holy Spirit would make her pregnant and she was to name him Jesus. Raised by Mary and Joseph (his earthly father), this baby would be the Son of God (Luke 1:35). When the time came, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. This is the event that Christians celebrate at Christmas.

For about 30 years, Jesus stayed with his family (Luke 3:23), following in his earthly father’s trade as a carpenter (Mark 6:3). Then, for the final 3 years of his life, he began to tell people about God and tell them that hope was on the way. During those years he taught 12 disciples who accompanied him throughout most of his ministry (Matthew 10:2-4). He also performed many miracles such as healing people, raising people from the dead and walking on water. This drew attention from the authorities, many of which were outraged by his teachings. Eventually, they called for his arrest and execution as they didn’t believe what Jesus was teaching. He was flogged, mocked and eventually nailed to a cross until he died (this is known as “crucifixion”).

He was then buried in a stone tomb.

Three days later, Jesus was found to have risen from the dead! For approximately 40 days, he would continue to preach, teach and heal and no one could dispute that he had risen from the dead. After this period, he ascended to Heaven.

This is an extremely brief overview of his life on earth. To learn more about exactly what Jesus did during his time on earth, we recommend that you read the four books known as “the Gospels”: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; these are eyewitness accounts of the life of Jesus.

A simple and condensed biography on the life of Jesus must only be a starting point for us. Was Jesus really God or just a man? What did Jesus teach? If he was God, why did he come to earth? Why did he rise from the dead? What does this all mean for humanity?
